One record from first call to signed deal: Synerger for consulting and M&A

Consulting and deal teams lose time and context across email, spreadsheets and shared drives. How Synerger keeps engagements and transactions in one place from the first call to the closed deal.

Key takeaways

  • Deals and engagements lose context when they live across inboxes, spreadsheets and drives
  • Synerger covers deal management, engagement management and knowledge and frameworks
  • Shared workspaces with clients cut status calls and version confusion

How deal and engagement work usually runs

A mid market acquisition starts with a call. Notes go into someone's notebook. A target list sits in a spreadsheet on one analyst's laptop. Screening comments arrive by email. When diligence starts, documents are shared through a mix of a data room, email attachments and a shared drive with folders named "final", "final v2" and "final use this". By the time the deal signs, nobody can easily reconstruct who knew what and when.

Consulting engagements have the same pattern on a smaller scale. Scope is agreed on a call, milestones live in a project tool nobody updates, and the client asks for a status report every Friday because they cannot see progress any other way.

Synerger is the platform we built so our consultants and our clients have one place to manage engagements and transactions, from the first call to the closed deal.

Three parts in one platform

Synerger brings three things together:

  1. Deal management. Deal pipeline, target screening, due diligence workspaces and document rooms for transactions.
  2. Engagement management. Project tracking, milestone reporting and structured deliverables for consulting work.
  3. Knowledge and frameworks. Valuation models, diligence checklists, BRD and SRS frameworks and playbooks built from real transactions.

Deals and engagements in one place

Deal management

For M&A and investment work, the record that matters is the deal. Synerger keeps it as one record as the deal moves through stages.

  • Pipeline. Every opportunity with its stage, owner, next step and history, so a partner can see the whole book without asking.
  • Target screening. Long lists and short lists in one place, with screening criteria and comments against each target.
  • Diligence workspaces. Request lists, responses, open questions and findings tracked by workstream: financial, legal, tax, commercial, technology.
  • Document rooms. Controlled sharing of transaction documents with the right parties, so you know which version each side has seen.

The practical gain is continuity. When an associate leaves halfway through, or a new advisor joins, the context is already in the record. Partners reviewing several mandates at once also get one view of where each stands, without chasing analysts for updates.

Engagement management

For consulting work, clients want to know three things: what is being done, whether it is on track, and where the outputs are.

  • Project tracking. Tasks and owners against the agreed scope.
  • Milestone reporting. Progress against milestones that both sides can see, which reduces the need for weekly status calls.
  • Structured deliverables. Reports, models and documents organised by milestone, with versions kept.

This fits the way we work under output oriented engagements, where acceptance of each output matters. When both sides can see what was delivered and when, acceptance is a clear, simple step.

Working with clients in the same space

Deals and engagements involve people outside your firm: the client's finance head, the target's management, lawyers, auditors. Giving each of them controlled access to the parts of the record they need changes how the work runs.

  • The client sees milestones and deliverables as they land.
  • The target team sees the diligence request list, uploads responses against each item and sees which items are still open.
  • Advisors on other workstreams see the documents and questions relevant to them, and not the rest.

This cuts the number of emails that say "please find attached the latest version" and the time spent working out which version is the latest. It also leaves a clear record of what was requested, provided and reviewed, which helps when a warranty question comes up after closing.

Access control matters here. Deal information is commercially sensitive and often price sensitive, and personal data in diligence documents, such as employee records, is covered by the DPDP Act 2023. Give each party the narrowest access that lets them do their part, and remove it when their work ends.

Knowledge that compounds

Every deal and engagement teaches something. Usually that learning stays in old folders. Synerger holds valuation models, diligence checklists, BRD and SRS frameworks and playbooks built from real transactions, so the next team starts from what worked last time.

A diligence checklist that has been refined over several deals catches issues a fresh one would miss. A BRD framework that has survived real projects asks the questions that save rework later.

Who it suits, and who it does not

Synerger is built for consulting teams, deal advisors, corporate development teams and investors who run several engagements or transactions at once and share work with clients and counterparties.

If you run one or two simple engagements a year, a shared drive and a disciplined spreadsheet may be all you need. And if you already have a mature virtual data room provider you are happy with for large deals, the right question is how the rest of the deal record connects to it.

Getting started

The first step is less about software and more about agreeing what a deal or engagement record should contain in your firm: stages, fields, required documents, who sees what. Once that is agreed, moving live work into one place usually takes a few weeks, starting with new deals and engagements and bringing older ones across as they become active.
